In the heart of the conflict-torn Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Major Radhika Sen emerged as a beacon of hope, compassion, and strength. Honored as the United Nations Military Gender Advocate of the Year 2023, her remarkable journey exemplifies Radhika Sen Peacekeeping Empowerment, showcasing the power of resilience, empathy, and leadership.

Breaking Barriers and Building Bridges

Serving as the Commander of the Engagement Platoon for the Indian Rapid Deployment Battalion in eastern DRC under the UN peacekeeping mission MONUSCO, Major Sen didn’t just lead; she transformed. She pioneered Community Alert Networks, providing a safe platform for women, youth, and community leaders to voice their concerns. By addressing these issues with her team, she brought tangible change to communities torn apart by conflict.

Empowering Women and Inspiring Change

In villages like Kashlira, Major Sen inspired women to come together, advocate for their rights, and participate actively in local security and peace discussions. Through her efforts, women found their voices and started shaping their destinies. Beyond her peacekeeping duties, she facilitated English classes for children and provided health, gender, and vocational training for displaced and marginalized adults.

Her work, often in volatile conditions, reflected an unwavering commitment to uplifting women and fostering inclusivity. By leading mixed-gender engagement patrols, she broke stereotypes and set an example for peacekeepers worldwide, proving that gender-sensitive peacekeeping is essential for building trust and creating lasting change.  

A Role Model for the World

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres praised Major Sen’s contributions, calling her service “a true credit to the United Nations.” Her achievements have brought immense pride to India, which ranks as the eleventh largest contributor of women peacekeepers globally.  

A Journey of Dedication and Excellence

Born in 1993 in Himachal Pradesh, Major Sen’s journey began as a biotech engineer before she earned her Master’s degree from IIT Bombay. She joined the Indian Army eight years ago and has since embodied the values of courage, leadership, and service.  

Reflecting on her award, Major Sen shared, “This recognition is for all peacekeepers working in challenging environments. Peace begins with all of us in our beautiful diversity.”
