Championing Millets and Agricultural Innovation at IIMR
Dr. C. Tara Satyavathi, an eminent agricultural scientist and researcher, currently serves as the Director of the Indian Institute of Millets Research (IIMR) in Hyderabad. With a career dedicated to advancing the science of plant breeding and genetics, Dr. Satyavathi Millets Innovation has been instrumental in transforming the perception and cultivation of millets in India. Under her visionary leadership, IIMR has made significant strides in promoting millets as a key component of sustainable agriculture and nutrition security, ensuring these ancient grains are restored to their rightful place in the Indian diet.
Achievements at IIMR
Since assuming the role of Director at IIMR, Dr. Satyavathi has spearheaded several initiatives to revitalize millet cultivation and consumption across India. Recognizing the critical role of millets in addressing food security, climate resilience, and nutritional deficiencies, she has focused on enhancing the productivity, marketability, and public awareness of these superfoods.

One of her notable achievements at IIMR has been the development of improved millet varieties that are not only high-yielding but also rich in essential nutrients. These varieties are tailored to thrive in India’s diverse agro-climatic conditions, providing a sustainable alternative to water-intensive crops like rice and wheat. Under her guidance, IIMR has also strengthened collaborations with farmers, NGOs, and farmer producer organizations to encourage the widespread adoption of millet cultivation, particularly in regions prone to drought and soil degradation.
Dr. Satyavathi’s leadership has extended beyond research to include public engagement and policy advocacy. She has championed the cause of millets through various national and international platforms, emphasizing their potential to improve health outcomes and combat malnutrition. IIMR, under her direction, has conducted numerous workshops, cooking demonstrations, and awareness campaigns to educate consumers on the benefits of incorporating millets into their daily diets.
Additionally, Dr. Satyavathi has been a strong advocate for integrating traditional knowledge with modern agricultural practices. She has overseen the curation of a comprehensive database of traditional and contemporary millet recipes, ensuring that these grains are not only accessible but also appealing to a modern audience. Through her efforts, IIMR has positioned itself as a leader in the global millet movement, contributing significantly to the United Nations’ declaration of 2023 as the International Year of Millets.

Track Record in Agricultural Research
Dr. Tara Satyavathi’s journey in agricultural science began long before her tenure at IIMR. Born on August 21, 1970, in Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, she pursued a B.Sc. in Agriculture in 1992 and an M.Sc. in Genetics and Plant Breeding in 1994 from Acharya N.G. Ranga Agricultural University. Her academic journey culminated with a Ph.D. in Genetics from the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), New Delhi, in 1998.
Her early career saw her making significant contributions as a Scientist at the National Research Centre for Soybean (NRCS) and later as a Senior Scientist and Principal Scientist at IARI. During this period, Dr. Satyavathi’s research focused on genetic improvement and breeding strategies for crops like rice, soybeans, and Brassica species. She has been at the forefront of utilizing molecular markers and advanced breeding techniques to enhance crop quality, resilience, and productivity.
In 2016, she was appointed as the Project Coordinator for the All India Coordinated Research Project on Pearl Millet (AICRP-PM), where she played a pivotal role in advancing pearl millet research. Her work in this capacity laid the foundation for her later achievements at IIMR, as she continued to explore the potential of millets to address the challenges of modern agriculture.
